Announcement about IPv4 exhaustion

What is IPv4 exhaustion?

IPv4 exhaustion happens when there is no more unallocated IPv4 addresses available.

APNIC IPv4 Available Pool

The bar graph below shows APNIC pool of available IPv4 addresses with the daily total of IPv4 addresses expressed in terms of /8s. The total decreased and increased according to APNIC allocations to networks, delegations of /8s received from IANA, and resource returns.

On 15 April 2011, the APNIC pool reached the last /8 of available IPv4 addresses, triggering the Final /8 policy

APNIC Pool

When will APNIC’s IPv4 pool be exhausted?

The APNIC community has created a policy for the special distribution of APNIC’s final /8 worth of addresses (16,777,216 addresses). The policy aims to ensure that new and emerging networks can continue to receive a small amount of IPv4 for many years to come so they can connect to both IPv4 and IPv6 networks during the transition to IPv6. Under this policy, Asia Pacific organizations can each request one, and only one, small slice (a /22, or 1024 addresses) of the final /8. Currently, APNIC has around 3000 account holders and had a membership growth rate of 300 new accounts during the past year. Given these variables, it will take a number of years to allocate all addresses from this final /8.

What happens when APNICs’ free pool is exhausted?

There is a policy available for organizations whose extra IPv4 addresses are not needed and who wish to transfer these addresses to other organizations that need them. For more information, see APNIC transfer, merger, acquisition, and takeover policy.

What are the solutions available?

To counter the problems of all IPv4 addresses being exhausted, IPv6 is a readily available solution and it is being deployed across the Internet. For more information, see IPv6 Program.

FREENET has already upgraded some of our core equipment to support IPv6 which is expected to be completed by 4Q 2011

Free Net Business Solutions (FREENET) pledges for Earth Hour 2011

Earth Hour

FREENET has once again joined millions around the world to pledge our support for Earth Hour on 26 March, 2011. To take collective action on climate change, the lights in our data center and Network Operation Center (NOC) were turned off for one hour from 8:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.

2010 was the first time FREENET participated in Earth Hour, a global event organized by WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) or better known as World Wildlife Fund. Since its inception three years ago in Sydney, Australia, Earth Hour initiative has become a global phenomenon. Iconic buildings and landmarks from Asia Pacific to Europe and Africa to America were officially switched off making the event the world’s largest global climate change initiative. People across the world from all walks of life turned off their lights and came together in celebration of one thing in common – our planet.

Earth Hour is more than switching off lights for one hour once a year, but rather adopting a more responsible daily lifestyle. Little things like switching to energy savings light bulbs, unplugging unused electronic devices, reducing waste, recycle, carpooling and planting trees make a difference in creating a sustainable low carbon future for our planet.
